Barbara Brann’s Building Blocks to Literacy and Casey the Caterpillar

Getting it Right from the Beginning

Presented by: Martina Schmidt, trained teacher with over 20 years teaching experience overseas and in NZ, Martina has been trained and accredited by Barbara Brann

The Education Ministry views a good start in early literacy - not only reading and writing, but also listening, talking, viewing and drawing - as "critical" to kids doing well later on. Claire McLachlan, Associate Professor in Early Years Education at Massey University's College of Education, said it is "Quite dangerous" having a phonics programme thrust on kids who were not yet developmentally ready for formal teaching.

Higher level cognitive tasks such as reading and writing are dependent upon the successful execution of sub skills and related tasks, many of which are motor tasks. If these sub skills are not automatic, the brain will concentrate on those rather than on the higher level tasks.

Did you know that the child has to learn 228 sub skills in order to be able to start formal learning?

Come and learn about these necessary sub skills ( Oracy, Concept of Print, Auditory, Visual and Motor Skills ) and how to implement the programme Casey the Caterpillar for easy and fun letter formation.

Workshops will be 3 hours each and will be in a block of 3. Coffee, tea, juice and snack will be provided. Limited places available, so don’t miss out! Workshops will be hands on. You will learn the theory and learn how to implement it into your daily programme.

Workshop 1 & 2 Barbara Brann’s Building Blocks to Literacy. Why is it important to manifest the sub skills in order to successfully execute reading and writing? Hands on activities to manage the implementation into the daily programme. The Building Blocks consist of 5 domains. To cover all domains plus hands on activities the workshop is in two parts and needs to be booked together. Hands on Activities are from Casey’s Treasure Chests and Getting Ready For School.
